The wife of a distinguished רב made his life so miserable that he said: “I’m certain שלא אראה פני גהינום.” When he died, his wife got remarried to a man ‘from the שוק’ and treated him well. When asked why she hated the רב, who was a גדול בישראל, and loved this plain new husband, she answered: “You are mistaken. I loved the רב and that’s why I made him גהינום בעולם הזה so that he should be פטור from the suffering of גהינום בעולם הבא. I simply don’t have the same love for my new husband.”
