The חיד״א, who traveled often, once traveled to a town where he was hosted by the local רב. Wanting to show him great כבוד, the host’s wife prepared all kinds of delicacies for שבת, but couldn’t find fish in the market. It was only after going from store to store that she finally found a large fish, but at an exorbitant price. When she came home and told her husband how much it cost, the חיד״א overheard her and remarked that it’s ממש חילול השם to pay so much money for one fish. In the evening, when serving the שבת meal, the wife placed before each seat a special delicacy that she had prepared from the כבד, the liver, of the fish. But she did not give a portion to the חיד״א. Surprised, he said “I know that you bought the fish in my honor. Why is it that you don’t give me from the כבד of the דג?” The Rebitzen responded: “במקום שיש חילול השם, אין חולקים כבד לרב.”
