Two representatives of a Jewish community in Eastern Europe came to the home of a Jew to collect the מס הקהילה.  When he told them that he didn’t have the money to pay, they took the pillow from his bed and the מנורה from a shelf.  The man went to the ראש קהילה and complained: “ממה נפשך, if you hold according to the מאן דאמר that the night was created for sleep and therefore they took my מנורה, then why did they take my pillow?  And if you hold like the מאן דאמר that the night was created for לימוד and therefore they took my pillow, why did they take my מנורה?”  The ראש קהילה replied: “We too are troubled by this question of why the night was created and don’t know עם מי הדין.  Therefore, we had two representatives come to you. The one who took the pillow holds like the מאן דאמר that the night was created for learning and the one who took the מנורה holds like the מאן דאמר that the night was created for sleep.”
