A father who went to see ר׳ יצחק אלחנן, brought his son along and asked the רב to test him.  The רב sat down with the young boy and asked him to explain a certain רש״י.  Unfortunately, the boy couldn’t do so.  ר׳ יצחק אלחנן turned to the father and said: “Your son is like one of the early גאונים.”  When the father and son left, the רב explained to his שמש, “Just as the early גאונים who preceded רש״י didn’t know רש״י, this boy too doesn’t know רש״י.”
