The מגיד of דובנה arrived one evening at a village inn, tired and hungry.  When he asked the innkeeper for food, the innkeeper expressed his regrets and showed him his room. The מגיד lay down to sleep, but the hunger gnawing at him kept him awake.  It was then that he saw the innkeeper sitting down to a fine meal.  In the morning, as the מגיד was about to leave, the innkeeper asked him to say a דבר תורה.  The מגיד obliged and said: “The גמרא saysלעולם אל ישנה אדם מן המנהג, שהרי משה עלה למרום ולא אכל לחם.  The question presents itself, why doesn’t it say that משה רבינו didn’t sleep?  After all, the מנהג of the מלאכים is also not to sleep, and that may be a greater feat than not to eat. The answer is that if משה רבינו didn’t eat, the hunger pangs wouldn’t let him sleep and ממילה he stayed up to make sure that the מלאכים also weren’t eating or sleeping.”
