A גביר קמצן had guests at his סדר table.  The גביר and his family were given large wine glasses, while the guests were given small glasses.  When they got to רבי יהודה היה נותן בהם סימנים, the host asked the guests “Why did רבי יהודה shorten the מכות to דצ״ח עד״ש באח״ב?”  One of the guests answered: “רבי יהודה was a חכם.  He knew that a guest would receive a small כוס and if he would have to spill from it ten times, he would be left with only a little wine.  Therefore, he made the סימנים so that the guest would need to spill only three times, leaving it to the גביר with the large כוס to spill separately for each of the ten מכות.”
