A שדכן approached שפירא רבי אריה-ליב of קובנה with a שידוך for his daughter. The boy was the son of a very wealthy man, whom the רב knew to be an עם הארץ. “I’m afraid that the son is like the father,” he said. The שדכן protested that he’s a good boy with many fine qualities. “You’re wasting your time,” רב אריה-ליב said. “I am concerned about the dictate of רבי יהודה החסיד that the name of the חתן should not be the same as the name of his father-in-law.” “But רבי,” the שדכן said, “the boy’s name is not אריה.” The רבי responded: “I’m not mistaken. It’s a גמרא מפורשת which says: המשיא בתו לעם הערץ, כאילו כופתה ונותנה לפני הארי.”
