On the שבת that the תוכחה was read, it was the מנהג that only the בעל קריאה himself would go up to the תורה. Once, in a Russian בית כנסת, a Jewish soldier who had been drafted to serve for 25 years in the army of the Czar was called to the תורה for the תוכחה. After the תפילה, one of the מתפללים approached the רב and asked why he selected the poor soldier for the curses in the פרשה. “It’s simple,” replied the רב. “An עבד של המלך doesn’t have to worry about the קללות in the תוכחה because the הלכה is that מה שקנה עבד קנה רבו.”
