A bitter מחלוקת broke out between two factions of Jews in a town in Galicia. Each one wanted their רב to be appointed as the רב of the town. As a result, a third rabbi was chosen for the position. He was Reform. Hearing this, רב יחזקאל משינאווא said: “I never understood why the תורה says לא תוכל לתת עליך איש נכרי. Who would think to have a נכרי rule over Jews? But now I see that when there is a מחלוקת it’s possible, because each side prefers that a גוי be selected, rather than the other faction’s choice.”
