On ערב יום כיפור, when the Jews of Kelm were filing into Shul for תפילת כל נדרי, the מגיד saw that among the congregation were non-observant Jews, wearing black hats for the occasion. Shaking his head, the מגיד said: “This is why the day is called יום כפורים, a day that is like פורים. On פורים, there are Jews who masquerade as גויים. On יום כפורים, there are גויים who masquerade as Jews.”
