A father brought his son before רבי אייזל חריף and asked that he test him so he can give him סמיכה. After speaking with the son for a short while, the רב saw how unlearned he was and told the father “Your son is like a מלאך. He doesn’t need סמיכה from me.” When the father and son left, those who had been present asked the רב in amazement, “How could you compare the son to a מלאך? He’s a complete עם הארץ.” The רב explained: “Yes, he is. But as חכמינו said in קידושין, the תורה wasn’t given to מלאכי השרת.”
