It is said that רבי לוי יצחק מברדיטשוב approached יום כיפור differently when it fell on שבת. He was very calm. When asked why, he explained that it is of course forbidden to write on שבת, except when it’s a matter of פיקוח נפש. It is therefore obvious that הקדוש ברוך הוא will write us down for חיים טובים, because that’s a matter of פיקוח נפש. But he can’t inscribe us for death because even if He wanted to do so, it’s אסור to write on שבת.
