An עם הערץ who became wealthy bought himself חתן תורה on שמחת תורה. One of the מתפללים commented to the רב that such an עם הארץ shouldn’t be permitted to buy חתן תורה. “What can I do?” the רב replied. “כך מנהג בישראל, שהחתן אינו מכיר את הכלה.”
