סוכה-כח

The great רב מאיר שפירא once explained the difference between a חסיד and a מתנגד in learning. “Two young men, one a חסיד and one a מתנגד, were learning the גמרא in מסכת סוכה which says of יונתן בן עוזיאל that בשעה שהיה יושב ועוסק בתורה – כל עוף הפורח מעליו באוויר מיד נשרף. The חסיד was very moved by the story and the holiness of יונתן בן עוזיאל. The מתנגד, on the other hand, asked “What is the דין? Is יונתן בן עוזיאל liable to pay for the damage that he caused to the owner of the burnt bird?”
