R’ יהודה אסאד was known for his חסד. He would go by foot to nearby towns to collect money forצרכי צדקה and even קמצנים would contribute when he knocked on their doors. One time, however, as he came to the home of an עשיר, the man rushed to hide in his backyard. The רב asked the servant who met him at the door to convey his thanks to the בעל הבית for giving him the understanding of why חז״ל said גדולה הכנסת אורחים יותר מקבלת פני שכינה. When the servant asked him to explain, the רב said: “The תורה teaches that when משה רבינו received the פני השכינה, he only hid his face – ויבתר משה פניו כי ירא מהביט. But this בעל הבית, when given the opportunity to be מקבל פני אורחים, hides his entire body and this is proof that הכנסת אורחים יותר מקבלת פני שכינה.
