Shortly before סוכות, while still in Europe, the סאטמאר רבי heard that the מתפללים in the main נוסח אשכנז shul, were surprised that he prayed with them only one שבת each month. When he spoke on סוכות, he said: “The מדרש tells us with respect to the ארבעה מינים that the אתרוג has טעם וריח, the לולב has טעם but not ריח, the הדס has ריח but doesn’t have טעם, and the ערבה has neither טעם nor ריח. The אתרוג has טעם וריח even though it’s מחבר with the other three מינים for a short time. Most of the time, however, it is alone.” The ציבור understood that that the רבי had good reason not to spend too much time with the פשוטי עם.
