It is said that the רמ״א appeared before the Governor of his region beautifully dressed, in the finest clothing. Upon his return, one of his students remarked: “רבי, it is written in משלי: אל תתהדר לפני המלך and the גמרא says יאה עניותן לישראל. Why did you get so dressed up?” The רמ״א responded: “It’s as you said. When I went to see the Governor, I did not want להתהדר לפני המלך, so I removed the פאר ישראל, which is עניותא and switched to finer clothing.”
