An אפיקורס was asked why he doesn’t go to Shul even on the ימים נוראים. He responded: “I may be an אפיקורס, but I learned גמרא. The גמרא says: אם פגע בך מנוול זה משכהו לבית המדרש, if the revolting one, namely the evil inclination, entices you, draw him into the בית מדרש. The shuls have many מנווולים and I don’t want to have anything to do with them.”
