The רבי of בארדיטשוב was asked why חסידים have a מנהג to drink a לחיים at every event.  He explained: “חז״ל tell us that הקדוש ברוך הוא מעביר ראשון ראשון; that is, He lets it pass the first time an עבירה is committed but punishes the second time.   Now, the גמרא teaches that it is על ידי משקין that a שני לטומאה is made a ראשון לטומאה.  That is why we drink משקין, so that the second עבירה should become ראשון and הקדוש ברוך הוא will thus let it pass.”
