The פוניבז׳אר רב was traveling on the subway in New York one night when he was surrounded by a bunch of hooligans who appeared ready to attack him. The רב pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket with an address on it and asked them if they know which stop to get off. They told him it was the next stop and they were getting off there as well, apparently figuring it was better to mug him on a dark street than in a subway car with other people. When the train approached the station, the רב rose from his seat and approached the doors but gave them the honor of going out first. He then stepped back for a moment and was saved by the closing doors. When asked how he came up with this solution, the רב explained that it was from יעקב אבינו. When עשו suggested נסעה ונלכה, the response יעקב gave was: יעבור נא אדוני לפני עבדו ואני אתנהלה לאיטי.
