Today’s דף cites a מחלוקת concerning the פסוק in מגילת אסתר which says מולך מהודו ועד כוש שבע ועשרים ומאה מדינה. The מחלוקת is whether הודו and כוש were far from each other or were close by. ר׳ יונתן אייבשיץ asked: according to the view that they were near each other, how could there have been 127 מדינות? He answered: among Jews it’s possible. We call a תפילין box a בית; a place in the בית מדרש is called an עיר; a burial plot is called a קרקע. Thus, even with הודו and כוש near each other, they could encompass 127 מדינות.
