An עני collecting מתנות לאביונים on פורים was turned down by an עשיר. The עני said to him, “If you’re not going to give me money, let me at least ask you a question about מגילת אסתר. At first, it says: היהודים הפרזים היושבים בערי הפרזות עושים את יום ארבע עשר לחודש אדר שמחה ומשתה ויום טוב. But several פסוקים later, it says: לעשות אותם ימי משתה ושמחה ומשלוח מנות איש לרעהו ומתנות לאביונים. Why is it that, unlike the earlier פסוק, this פסוק omits the mention of יום טוב?” The עשיר didn’t have an answer. “I’ll explain it to you,” said the עני. “When the עשירים, who had lots of influence, heard the words מתנות לאביונים, they protested and said that the day is not fit to be designated as יום טוב.”
