An interesting explanation for why the בנות צלפחד said אבינו מת במדבר ולא היה בתוך העדה הנועדים על ה׳ and בנים לא היו לו is the following:  In today’s דף, the גמרא notes that ויקנאו למשה במחנה teaches that while in the מדבר, all men admonished their wives to stay away from משה רבינו.  Similarly, in סנהדרין קי, the גמרא notes וישמע משה ויפול על פניו שמע שחשדוהו באשת איש.  Because this was a cause of embarrassment for the women who had been wrongly suspected by their husbands, חז״ל teach in סוטה that, as compensation, those women in the מדבר who were destined to give birth to daughters instead gave birth to sons.  The daughters of צלפחד therefore said to משה רבינו that their father was not amongst those רשעים in the מדבר and this can be seen from the fact that בנים לא היו לו.
