A למדן had an appointment to meet a בעל הבית, but when he arrived at his home, the בעל הבית was eating a סעודה.  Hungry, the למדן expected that he would be invited to take a seat and share in the meal.  But it did not happen.  Instead, the בעל הבית asked the למדן for a דבר תורה.  Still standing, the למדן said as follows: “מסכת חגיגה says  ששה דברים בבני אדם: שלושה כמלאכי השרת, שלושה כבהמה. שלושה  כמלאכי השרת: יש להם דעת, ומהלכין בקומה זקופה, ומספרים בלשון הקדש כמלאכי השרת. ושלושה כבהמה: אוכלין ושותין, פרין ורבין, ומוציאים רעי כבהמה. Thus, when a Jew enters a home where a סעודה is taking place and says בלשון קודש the greeting ברוכים היושבים, he exhibits the characteristics of the מלאכי השרת – he is speaking בלשון הקודש and is standing erect.  He does this, while the בעל הבית is eating, as a בהמה would.  Therefore, there is a מנהג בישראל that one who is eating says to one who is standing ‘come and eat.'”
