When ר׳ מאיר שפירא was asked why he built his ישיבה in Lublin like a mansion, notwithstanding the statement of חז״ל that כך דרכה של תורה – this is the path of Torah – פת במלח תאכל ומים במשורה תשתה ועל הארץ תישן, he answered: “As you know, חז״ל also said הקורא בלא זמרה והשונה בלא נעימה עליו הכתוב אומר: ואני נתתי לכם חוקים לא טובים.  Now, can that possibly mean that the רבונו של עולם gave us חוקים לא טובים?  Of course not.  Rather, it is meant to be read as a question: Have I given you חוקים לא טובים?  Similarly, חז״ל asked כך דרכה של תורה?”
