A רב visiting a town which didn’t have any תלמידי חכמים, commented that it’s a case of כי מלאה הארץ חמס. When asked how he could say such a thing, he explained: “This town doesn’t learn גמרא, הלכה, דרוש, מוסר or מידות. The only ספרים people have are a חומש, מחזור, וסידור. Their first letters, ח, מ, ס, spell חמס.”
