A שדכן suggested for the son of a prominent member of the קהילה in Vilna, a girl from a small town.  He praised the girl to no end, but the father did not rely on the שדכן and went to the town to inquire about her and her family.  “ישמרך אלוקים,” he was told.  “She’s a רשות הרבים for the officers and doctors in town.”   The furious father of the boy immediately returned to Vilna and when the שדכן came to see him, he spared no rebuke for having even suggested such a שידוך for his son.  “Calm down,” the שדכן said.   “Are you comparing that small town to Vilna?  After all, how many officers and doctors do you think there are in such a small town?”
