When a community was looking to hire a רב, some of the residents objected that he wasn’t enough of a תלמיד חכם for them. One of his defenders said: “He’s perfect for the position. He will serve us faithfully and we won’t have to be concerned that perhaps he’ll take שחד. As it is said: השחד יעור עיני חכמים and this רב won’t even try. As it is said: שומר פתאים השם.”
