Today’s דף states: לאיש אסרה, הזה התירה, meaning that if a father says that he has given his daughter to a man, without identifying which man, he has forbidden her to all men. But when he identifies the man by saying ‘this man,’ he permits her to him. Commenting on this, ר׳ יוסף בער כהנא העללער said that if a father gives his daughter to just any man, it is as if he is placing her before a lion, as stated in Pesachim 49b: כל הנותן בתו לעם הארץ כאלו כפתה ונתנה לפני ארי. But if he gives her לזה, namely a תלמיד חכם, and not just anyone, התירה.
