The מלבי״ם once asked an אפיקורס why he isn’t שומר שבת? The אפיקורס answered that he is a man of principle and doesn’t want to give the false impression that he is religious. The מלבי״ם responded: “You have clarified for me a פסוק in ירמיה, which says: שבתך בתוך מרמה, במרמה מאנו דעת אותי. I now understand that it means that the רבונו של עולם is saying כביכול that people are steeped in deception, deception in business, deception in dealing with their family and friends and the like, but when it relates to me, they are מדקדק in their principles and refuse to know me.”
