A wealthy עם הארץ bought חתן תורה on שמחת תורה and according to the prevalent custom a חופה was prepared for him, as is done for a חתן going to greet the כלה. One of the congregants asked the רב how he could permit such a boor to go under the חופה with the תורה? The רב answered: “It’s an old custom שהחתן אינו יודע את הכלה.”
