In פרשת ויגש, the תורה tells us that יעקב אבינו sent יהודה ahead to יוסף in order להורות, which רש״י teaches means לתקן לו בית תלמוד. Why did he select דוקה יהודה, rather than לוי, whose role is להורות תורה בישראל, or יששכר, whose strength is the study of תורה? The answer given by ר׳ יוסף שלמה כהנמן, the פוניבז׳ ראש ישיבה, is that a ראש ישיבה needs to be someone who can say אני אערבנו, even though he well knows that such a guarantor needs a guarantor of his own.
