Moshe and Dovid, ‘landsman’ who had not seen each other since they had emigrated from Poland almost a dozen years earlier, ran into each other in Manhattan one day. “How’s by you?” asked Moshe. “I can’t complain,” answered Dovid. “In that case,” said Moshe, “perhaps you can lend me a few dollars.” “What are you talking about?” said Dovid. “I hardly know you anymore.” Surprised at the response, Moshe said: “What irony! Back in the home country no one would lend me money because they knew me. Here in America, no one will lend me money because they don’t know me.”
