A תלמיד חכם who had reached זיקנה and now was dependent on his sons for support, being passed from one to to the other, sighed and said: “Until now, I had never understood the reaction of יעקב אבינו when he went down to מצרים and saw his beloved son, יוסף. He said “אמותה הפעם.” This always troubled me because now that he discovered that יוסף was alive and ruled over מצרים and all his children were together and reconciled with one another, he should have looked forward to enjoy life. Why אמותה הפעם? Apparently, יעקב was thinking אל תשליכני לעת זקנה. When I have to rely on my son for all my needs, I’m ready to die.”
