Isaac didn’t have much of an education but needed to make a living. Getting a job was very difficult. He was almost hired as a שמש, when the shul found out he was illiterate and turned him down. Unable to find a job, he went peddling from door to door and, having a good head and a good personality, was very successful. Soon, he opened a store and then another. Within a few years, he had a dozen stores in the northeast. When he went to the bank for financing, the manager was stunned to discover that this successful businessman couldn’t even write his name. “Just think what you could have been if you had an education,” the manager said. “Yes,” said Isaac, “I’d be a שמש.”
