A רב was once asked to explain why the חכמים said in a מדרש that כל תלמיד חכם שאין בו דעת, נבילה טובה הימנו׳.’ How can it be that a נבילה is better than him? The רב explained: “We find in מסכת בבא בתרא that מרחיקין את הנבילות מן העיר חמישים אמה. By contrast, in מסכת סנהדרין we learn that אדם שאין לו דעה לבסוף הוא גולה, שנאמר: גלה עמי בלי דעת. From this we see that a נבילה is better than a חסר דעת because a נבילה needs to be kept only fifty אמה from the city but a חסר דעת had to be exiled as far away from the city as possible, without a שיעור.”
