A poor Jew, whose primary asset was יחוס, rejected all of the חתנים that a שדכן suggested for his daughter. “I don’t understand you,” one of the שדכנים said. “Your daughter is a fine girl, but between you and me, she is not young and is not blessed with great beauty or money. Yet, you demand גדלות.” Offended, the man replied: “But I’m descended from קדושים. The מהר״ל of Prague was my ancestor.” Smiling, the שדכן said: “If that’s the case, I have the perfect boy for your daughter; a בחור the likes of which even the מהר״ל was not זוכה to have.” Surprised, the יחסן exclaimed: “גדול כזה יש בדורינו?” The שדכן replied: “I didn’t say he’s a גדול. But the גולם of the מהר״ל existed for only a single day and the boy I have in mind has ברוך השם been around for almost thirty years.”
