נזיר נה

A man once brought his son to רבי יצחק אלחנן and asked the רבי to test him on his studies. The רבי tested the boy on a particular רש״י and afterwards said to the father “Your son is like the early גאונים.” The father’s face lit up with נחת. After they left, the רבי explained to those present: “The boy is like the early גאונים because, having preceded רש״י, they of course didn’t know רש״י. The same holds true for this boy. He doesn’t know רש״י.”
