An immigrant Jew was talking to a prominent חזן. “Isn’t it strange,” the newcomer observed, “that there are so many חזנים in this country, yet American Jews are far from being religious.” “It’s not so strange when you go back to the תורה,” replied the חזן. “When השם asked משה to address פרעה, he declined, stating that he was slow of speech and slow of tongue. But when he crossed the ים סוף we see אז ישיר משה. Immigrant Jews are only emulating משה רבינו: Once they cross the Atlantic, every one of them suddenly becomes a Kossovitzky.”
