Rebbi משה of איוויה was a great תלמיד חכם and an extremely modest person, with no גאווה. He was once asked: “Doesn’t it say in 5a of מסכת סוטה that תלמיד חכם צריך שיהא בו שמינית שבשמינית גאווה?” The רבי replied: “חכמינו were referring to just the opposite. A תלמיד חכם must always remember the eighth פסוק in the eighth פרשה of the תורה, namely וישלח, which expressly says: קטונתי מכל החסידים.”
