When ר׳ מאיר שפירא sought to send שליחים to collect funds for his ישיבה, he was asked what kind of שליחים he was looking for. The רב answered: “When משה רבינו was told to send מרגלים, he was told שלך לך אנשים ויתורו. The לשון of ויתורו can be understood as ויותירו, meaning that they will put the interests of the ציבור ahead of their own interests. Similarly, our שליחים should be מותיר on the monies raised for the ישיבה.”
