The community in a town was so torn apart by מחלוקות that there was hardly a תפילה during which people weren’t fighting with each other. The רב did what he could to make peace but it was to no avail. In a שבת דרשה he said: “When יעקב, fleeing from his brother עשו, said אין זה כי אם בית אלוקים, how did he know that it was בית אלוקים? Because, as the מדרש tells us, the rocks there were arguing with each other, each saying עלי יניח צדיק ראשו. When יעקב saw this, he figured if even the rocks are arguing, הרי אין זה כי אם בית אלוקים.”
