An עני was invited for a שבת meal. The table was set with delicious foods. Being hungry, the עני helped himself to a heaping plate of food and then took seconds, leaving very little for his host. The host turned to his guest and said: “Now I understand why we separate from the מלאכים who accompany us home on ליל שבת and say to them צאתכם לשלום before we sit down to the סעודה. Apparently, there is concern that if the מלאכים see the fine foods prepared for שבת, they’ll eat them all and not leave anything for their host.”
