A Rabbi known for his preaching about the need to nurture children with warmth and love was coming home from Shul when he saw a group of children playing in the freshly laid concrete of his driveway, their little feet leaving lasting impressions. He lost control and began screaming at them. A member of his congregation who was passing by turned to the Rabbi and asked “How can you scream at the children like that? You’ve always stressed how important it is to treat children with warmth and love.” The Rabbi responded: “I love the children in the abstract, not in the concrete.”
