R’ אייזיל חריף was asked to test a בחור ישיבה and confer סמיכה on him. The test did not go well. The רבי told the boy’s father that his son is like a מלאך אלוקים and doesn’t need סמיכה from him. The father and son left happy but the students of the רבי were stunned. “How could you say he’s like a מלאך אלוקים? It’s evident that he’s a בור ועם הארץ.” The רבי smiled and said: “Have you forgotten that מסכת קידושין says לא ניתנה תורה למלאכי השרת?”
