Many years ago, a רב informed the פרנסים of his קהילה that he would be leaving them to become the רב in Worms, the city in which רש״י studied. The פרנסים held an emergency meeting and offered the רב a substantial raise if he would remain with them. When he agreed, one man exclaimed: “This proves that when there is a מחלוקת between רש״י and תוספות the הלכה is like תוספות, because בשביל רש״י ביקש רבנו לעזוב אותנו, ובשביל תוספות נשאר בתוכנו.”
