בבא קמא כה

On פורים, the בני הקהילה came to visit the רב of the city to celebrate the holiday with him. When the רב poured wine for them in little כוסיות, one of the visitors had the temerity to ask why they were being served in such little cups. The רב answered: “The תורה tells us that when יעקב אבינו forgot פכים קטנים, he returned for them. But יעקב was wealthy. Why did he bother to go back for them? Apparently, when יעקב saw that עשיו was coming towards him with 400 men, he realized that he would have to serve them wine and if he did so in large כוסות, the wine that he had in his possession wouldn’t be sufficient. Thus, he went back to retrieve the פכים הקטנים to serve the wine.”
