The רב of Moscow, ברוך פריידנברג, once called up to the תורה for the תוכחה a young Jewish soldier who was forced to serve in the Czar’s army. One of the congregants asked the רב, “Why did you give this young man such an inauspicious עליה?” The רב responded: “He is an עבד לאדוניו. And since whatever is acquired by the עבד is acquired by his master, this תוכחה belongs to his master, the Czar.”
