Many members of a קהילה asked a רב to establish a דף יומי שיעור. The רב did so, but only a few actually showed up on a regular basis. Nevertheless, upon the completion of each מסכת, when the סיום was celebrated with a festive סעודה, practically the entire קהילה would show up. The מגיד שיעור remarked: “רבי עקיבא said ׳את – לרבות תלמידי חכמים׳. That is to say in the אשכנזי הברה, ‘es,’ which in Yiddish means eat. When food is served, the number of ׳תלמידי חכמים׳ multiplies and everyone joins in the meal.”
