The בריסקר רב was asked: “Rumor has it that רב so and so takes שוחד when he sits as a דיין and when he is פוסק הלכות. How do you explain that he nevertheless has good eyesight? After all, we know that השוחד יעור עיני חכמים.” “Yes, so it is written,” said the רב, “But the רב you are talking about is not a חכם by any stretch of the imagination. שוחד only blinds עיני חכמים, not עיני שוטים גמורים.”
